Full disclosure: I make Humla, one of the options below, so treat me as biased. I've tried to be straight about where the others are the better call.
First, an outdated premise to correct
A lot of "Otter alternative" lists still say Otter forces a visible bot into your calls. As of July 2026 that's no longer true: Otter's desktop app (macOS 12.3+ / Windows 10+) records your meeting audio directly, bot-free, alongside the classic Notetaker bot. So "no bot" on its own isn't a reason to leave Otter anymore.
What hasn't changed is where your meetings go: Otter transcribes and stores everything in its US cloud, with no on-device mode. So the honest reasons people still switch are price, privacy, and the fact that Otter has grown into a sales/RevOps suite that's more than a lot of people need.
Why people look for an Otter alternative
- Price. Paid plans run $17–30/user/month, and the free tier is tight — 300 transcription minutes a month, 30-minute recording sessions, and only 3 lifetime file imports.
- It's cloud-only. Audio and transcripts are uploaded to and stored on Otter's servers; there's no fully on-device option.
- It's become a sales tool. The AI meeting agent, CRM automations, and RevOps features are great if you're in sales — and overkill if you just want clean notes.
- It's closed-source, so "trust us with your calls" is a promise you can't audit.

Like Otter it now has a botless desktop mode, though the bot is still the default for calendar meetings. The real heads-up is its recap email, which defaults to everyone on the invite — great for adoption, awkward for confidential client calls.
